In Grands Formats, his inaugural solo exhibition in France at Galerie Le Feuvre (March 29 – April 21, 2018), Jan Kolata unveiled a series of large-scale abstract paintings that exemplify his mastery of color, structure, and spatial dynamics. A graduate of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied under Gerhard Richter, Kolata has developed a distinctive approach that balances deliberate composition with the spontaneity of fluid acrylics. By layering translucent veils of paint, he creates works that are both vibrant and contemplative, inviting viewers to engage with the interplay of chance and control.
Kolata's technique involves pouring and manipulating paint on canvases laid flat, allowing colors to merge organically while guiding their flow to achieve a harmonious balance. This process results in compositions where underlying layers subtly emerge, adding depth and complexity to the surface. The exhibition not only highlighted Kolata's innovative methods but also underscored his contribution to contemporary abstraction, where emotion and intellect converge on a grand scale.
