One Planet Under a Groove explores the influence of hip hop culture on contemporary art from its beginnings as a vibrant street culture with a modest underground economy to a widespread phenomenon in the United States with various regional styles, to the dominant form of popular youth culture in the country exported globally and adapted to numerous international contexts. The exhibition focuses on the ways in which visual artists have critically and reflexively drawn from the aesthetics, politics, and social contexts of hip hop culture to reframe the discourse of identity politics in a global era and to expand the art historical discourse.
