20 years on, the Darkside fanzine is back with The Backup, a book of over 1,000 pages divided into two volumes - The Backup Vol. 1 and The Backup Vol. 2 - containing over 6,000 archives, mainly from the 1990s and 2000s.
The first edition of Darkside was distributed in 1996 to specialist shops in Paris. It was a black and white graffiti fanzine with a print run of 100 copies, produced with a pair of scissors and a tube of glue. The following years saw the publication of seven more issues, two special 'train' series and a DVD.
Twenty years later, The Backup unveils more than 6,000 archives of urban art accumulated over some thirty years. This collective work retains the spirit of its beginnings, with a no-frills layout to get to the point, a few black and white pages to recall the first fanzines made from scratch, and uncaptioned photographs to maintain the mystery surrounding these underground artists.
Backup Vol. 1 presents photographs of graffiti produced internationally (USA, Europe, France, various artists) and in Paris (Oldies, Lettrages & persos, Expos & Festivals, Terrains intra-muros, Terrains de banlieue, Voies ferrées & stations, Trains, Writers).
