Chris Daze Ellis began his prolific career painting gritty New York subways in the mid-1970s while attending the High School of Art & Design. He is one of the few artists from that period to make the successful transition from the subways to the studio. His first group show was the Beyond Words exhibition at New York city’s Mudd Club in 1981. His first solo show, a year later, was at Fashion Moda, a gallery in the South Bronx. Since then he has had countless solo exhibitions in cities such as Monte Carlo, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing, New York, Chicago, Milan, and Florence. His work has continued to be included in numerous group shows and museum surveys internationally. Alongside these museum and gallery exhibitions Daze has completed many public art projects, including murals for the Star Ferry terminal in Hong Kong, the Vivo City shopping mall in Singapore, and an entire train station in Hannover, Germany—in collaboration with fellow artists Lee Quinones and Crash—and has conducted youth workshops in Brazil, Ecuador, Switzerland, and New York. Daze’s paintings are in the private collections of Eric Clapton, Madonna, and Natalie Imbruglia, among others. His work can also be found in the permanent collections of The Brooklyn Museum, New York; The Museum of The City of New York; The Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Mass.; The Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven Conn.; The Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Germany’ and The Groninger Museum, Groningen, the Netherlands. Daze continues to live and work in New York City.
