JR's project, of which Women are heroes is the 3rd part - after 28 mollimetres and Face 2 Face published by Alternatives - consists of using a 28-millimetre lens to take portraits of "ordinary people" and display them in the street. Here, the focus is on women from Kenya, Brazil, India and Cambodia. They never make the headlines, but are the real pillars of their society, despite the wars and violence of everyday life. She uses her artistic practice as a basis for discussion, to deal with topical issues in an innovative, provocative and objective way. Her work mixes art and action, and speaks of commitment, freedom, identity and limits.
The film Women are heroes, directed by JR, was released in January 2011.
