Anonymous street artist Banksy is one of the most famous artists in the world today. The origins of his preferred technique, stencil graffiti, have so far remained largely unexplored.

The exhibition Stencil Stories is now dedicated to their history. Beginning in the 19th century, we show stencils for use, propaganda and resistance stencils before 1945, protest stencils from May 1968, artist stencils from Pop Art and Conceptual Art, stencils from punk and pochoirists to street art stencils and Banksy.

The exhibited objects in Stencil Stories are mostly stencil tools, not artworks created with stencils. Another focus of the show is the documentation of previously self-authorised street art. Among others, we display original stencils by influential pioneers of stencil street art such as Blek le Rat or John Fekner, as well as stencil editions and ephemera by stencil graffiti pioneers such as David Wojnarowicz, Vhils, Alex Vallauri, C215, Banksy or punk bands like Crass and The Clash.
